Lockdown treats: Brighton Restaurants at home

Lockdown treats: Brighton Restaurants to your door

Week 7 of lockdown in the UK, and I don’t know about you, but I am in a complete state of confusion as to what the heck is going on! One positive, is that some of my favourite local Brighton and Hove restaurants are offering up some tasty treats to takeaway or deliver.

And I don’t know about you, but that’s something I can get my head around.

Cin Cin at Home

Cin Cin

My favourite Italian restaurant in Brighton and Hove have put together Cin Cin At Home boxes. Launched a few weeks ago, each box contains a three-course meal for two, and has a vegetarian Arancio and salumi selection to start, a handmade pasta with vegetarian sauce for two as a main, and a dessert for two to finish.

We tried it in their first week of launching it, and were not disappointed - the food was delicious, and super easy to finish off in our small kitchen at home. Delivery is on Friday and Saturday afternoons, and they also have a selection of Italian wines to add to your order if you fancy.

Ordering starts at 6pm every Wednesday, via the Local ordering app here.

Cin Cin have also teamed up with The Flourpot Bakery to deliver homemade lasagnes ready to reheat and share at home.

Available from Thursday this week via The Flourpot Bakery website. Both meat and vegetarian option available - each serve 6 people.

Fatto A Mano Deliveroo

Fatto A Mano

If there’s one thing I’ve been craving for the last 7 weeks, it’s pizza from Fatto A Mano, heck, I’m not even ashamed to say that during one of my lockdown meltdowns a couple of weeks ago, I shed a few tears as I just wanted one of their pizzas so bad. Emotions were running high in the household!

So, when they announced a couple of days ago that they were reopening their Hove branch for takeout and delivery only, it was the best news ever! They opened back up on Monday, and I've set my weekly meal plan around this - pizza for lunch and dinner is totally acceptable.

You can order via Deliveroo, order at the counter in their Hove branch (social distancing rules are in place), or go through their website for collection.

Petit Pois home delivery

Petit Pois

French restaurant, Petit Pois have created a take on their seasonal menu that can be enjoyed at home, including their popular Sunday roasts. This is one of my go-to restaurants with my girlfriends when we want to eat somewhere central in Brighton, so we can head out dancing after. Make sure you order their delicious goats cheese croquettes - just thinking about them is making me hungry!

Open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday 12-3 and 6-9, you can order via Deliveroo, or give the restaurant a call and order directly, with pick up only.

The Coal Shed at home

The Coal Shed

Brighton steak restaurant The Coal Shed are bringing their restaurant to your table at home. All dishes are served to share between two and prepared to be finished at home with cooking instructions.

The menu looks delicious, and you can also add a variety of wines to your order - plus, on a Sunday, they're offering up their sharing roasts to order! Food is available for curbside collection or delivery Thursday - Saturday between 3- 6pm and Sunday between 1-3pm. Due to limited availability, food needs to be pre ordered by 4pm for the next day.

Orders can be made here

Wild Flor to your door

Wild Flor

The lovely people at this Hove-based restaurant have recently launched Wild Flor, to your door, a finish at home three course meal box. Each box is designed to feed one person, and costs £25.

There’s one box for meat-eaters and another for veggies, with box contents set to change weekly and in line with the seasons. We tried it out a couple of weeks ago, and as much as we miss visiting their restaurant, these guys have nailed the food offering, with perfect portion sizes and delicious food. I just hope they add their anchovies as an option to order soon - I miss those slippery little suckers!

Wild Flor are also listing a few wine options, so you can place an order with your food. From sparkling, white, red, rose, or even lager, these have been chosen to go perfectly with your meal.

Not that local? But still keen to order? Well, if you get in touch with them, they may be able to arrange for you to collect direct from the restaurant. Since launching a couple of weeks ago, they have been selling out in 20-25 minutes after orders open - amazing!

Ordering starts at 5pm every Tuesday, via the Local ordering app here.

The Urchin Hove

The Urchin

Starting this week, my local pub are trialing four of their favourite dishes, to share and finish at home. They suggest mixing three of these dishes between two people; Moules Mariniere, Malaysian Prawns, Cuttlefish Feijoada with Chorizo and White Beans and Clams with garlic, chilli white wine and coriander. They're super easy to prepare in no more that 5-10 minutes, and they'll have some wine and beers from their list that can be paired with the dishes.

Order via their website now. Pickup is direct from The Urchin in Hove, between midday - 3pm Friday or Saturday this weekend. Alternatively, if you're unable to pick up, and live in Brighton or Hove, they will deliver to you.

Brighton blogger

It's been nearly a year since my last post - time does fly.

I'll be honest with you, I had sort of fallen out of love with blogging, and wasn't sure if I wanted to keep going.

Nearly a year on, and I've had a change of heart, and with the current climate we're in, I needed a distraction.

So I've decided to start writing again, and give the ol' blog a little redesign.

I'm looking forward to sharing current, relatable content, plus what I've been up to over the last year.

Boy, do we have a lot to catch up on!

Octoberbest, Brighton
I’ve lived in Brighton my whole life, and over the last few years, the restaurant scene has massively boomed. OctoberBest, Brighton’s premier restaurant festival is returning for its third year, bigger and better than ever.

Between 5 to 21 October, an extended selection of Brighton’s best restaurants will participate in the
festival, offering a variety of £20 menus, special discounts or one-off events featuring dishes
and dining experiences created especially for the festival.
Octoberbest, Brighton
Octoberbest, Brighton
OctoberBest reflects the quality, wealth and diversity of Brighton's restaurant scene, with stunning Sussex seafood at The Salt Room, The Urchin and English’s; flame grilled meat at The Coal Shed; and inventive small plates and fantastic wines at Fourth and Church and Plateau.

The festival will also feature gastropub dining at the recently refurbished Ginger Pig; modern European cuisine at Semolina; cracking Italian food at Cin Cin; and cutting edge vegetarian food at Terre a Terre.
Octoberbest, Brighton
My favourite Brighton restaurants are all on the list, with highlights including a series of sold-out 64 Degrees pop-up events where chef and owner Michael Bremner and head chef Michael Notman-Watt will be going back to the roots of the restaurant to serve a menu that will illustrate ‘how it all began’; zero-waste restaurant Silo’s Ambrosia menu which chef Douglas McMaster says is ‘a twist on ‘the food of the gods’, championing wild ingredients, unknown ingredients and nose to tail that are often not given the attention they deserve’; and The Set’s Fill Your Wellie Boots menu that includes a selection of the restaurant’s creative small plates such as rabbit bao, carrot slaw, tofu, green chilli and Beef cheek flatbread, tahini, XO sauce, all with vegetarian alternative options.
Octoberbest, Brighton

The Chilli Pickle are offering up a mysteriously titled The Nizams of Hyderabad, the ever-popular Bincho Yakitori have pulled out the stops with a generous offering of salmon sashimi, oxtail harumaki, grilled skewers, fried rice with kimchi and green tea ice cream with sesame cookies. Not to be outdone, The Gingerman are offering a sharing feast for two people of Lancing College Farm rare-breed pork Tamworth/Berkshire cross to include roasted loin, black pudding ballotine, confit belly, crispy croquette, crackling and accompaniments, and finally, my absolute favourite, Little Fish Market are offering a £20 tasting menu, that has been so popular it sold out on the day it went live.

An excuse, if any for a little visit to the seaside, and a total win for us Brighton residents!

Cin Cin, Hove

7 February 2018

Cin Cin, Hove
They launched their first Italian Bar and kitchen in the backstreets of the North Laines in 2016, and little over a year later, one of my favourite restaurants in Brighton, Cin Cin have opened their second restaurant just along the road in Hove.

Cin Cin Hove is a very welcome addition — it’s the Italian restaurant the neighborhood has been needing for a LONG time. It has stuck to the same formula as their Brighton site, with an open kitchen and counter seating setup but is bigger, with around 35 covers and a private dining area for groups.
Cin Cin, Hove
The menu has similarities to their Brighton site with small plates, home-made pasta and antipasti still on the menu, but with the addition of the ‘secondi’ section, featuring three dishes which are designed to be the main course of your meal - a real game changer.

Another new addition to their Hove site, is the preparation kitchen based downstairs in the restaurant, giving Head Chef Jamie Halsall and his team the chance to create more dishes and prepare things that can take a lot of time and space for both the Brighton and Hove sites.

Perfect for lunch or diner (or both!) you'll be welcomed by David and his team and sat overlooking the kitchen area and bar.
Cin Cin, Hove
Kick things off with a board of antipasti, featuring a selection of Italian salumi and cheeses - the perfect snack whilst you make the all important decisions on what to order next.
Cin Cin, Hove
Nduja & polenta crochette, parsley mayonnaise - light and fluffy with a little kick.
Cin Cin, Hove

Next up, my all time favourite - Burrata with Beetroot and Basil
Cin Cin, Hove
Cin Cin, Hove
Eating our way through the menu, we couldn't forget to have one of their home-made pasta dishes -  Cin Cin's take on Spaghetti carbonara, with smoked eel and confit egg yolk.
Cin Cin, Hove
Aside from the laid-back atmosphere and wonderful staff, being able to sit back and watch the chefs cook up dish after dish of delicious Italian food is one of my favourite things to do.
Cin Cin, Hove
Cin Cin, Hove
From their Charcoal Robata grill - Sussex pork, creamy polenta, smoked king cabbage

Gorgeous flavours, with crackling that had us fighting over it.

If that doesn't get you dribbling all over your keyboard, and booking a space, then I'm sure this will
Cin Cin, Hove
Birra-misu.

Oh yes, you heard right!

A modern, softer take on an Italian classic, substituting marsala with coffee-flavoured stout and salted caramel.

See you at the pass!

Baby Bao, Brighton

19 July 2017

Baby Bao, Brighton
There's no hiding the fact that Brighton is full of amazing places to eat - it's a struggle to keep up with all the new openings and pop-ups, and I live here!

Baby Bao have been a regular at Friday's Street Diner for a while, and now they have taken up residency at Brighton pub, The Pond. Serving up their take on Taiwanese street food in the form of steamed buns and small plates.

The Pond in Brighton just so happens to be a mere 5 minute walk from my office - perfect for lunch or even an after-work snack (or stay longer and have a feast!). Between two of us, we ordered a couple of buns and and small plates to share, and came away pretty full. The portions are a great size and the buns are perfection.

They're also less than a 5 minute walk to Brighton station, so perfect for a pre or post train snack. Beats grabbing a bag of crisps and a sandwich from M&S.

The Harbour Hotel Spa, Brighton

I love a pamper (who doesn't?!) so when I heard that the hotel I stayed in over my wedding had opened their spa, I put my out of office on and headed down to the Harbour Hotel in Brighton, for a morning of relaxation and pampering.

The Ginger Rooms, Hove

21 June 2017

The Ginger Rooms, Hove

If you follow me on social media, you may have seen me bleat on about my favourite place for cocktails and food on a Friday night. The Ginger Pig in Hove, is pretty much our local pub, and part of the Gingerman restaurant group, with other properties scattered around Brighton and Sussex.

A couple of weeks ago, a new addition to the ginger group opened up above the Ginger Pig. The Ginger Rooms consists of 11, beautifully designed boutique bedrooms.

We were offered a chance to sleepover in one of the rooms and after a long week away on a work trip, I jumped at the chance and took the husband with me.The Ginger Rooms, Hove

The welcome is casual but warm - no formal check-in - and you're shown straight to your room.
We stayed in one of the feature rooms which was spacious, simple but luxurious - my husband had to drag me out the following morning as I didn't want to leave.

The rooms are beautifully decorated. Retro lamps, gorgeous furnishings and artworks that stand out against the grey-green colour palette. The bathroom features a walk in shower, big enough for two, geometric, monochrome tiling and Cowshed products to pamper yourself with.

There’s a free-standing bath in the bedroom, which I took serious advantage of later on that evening, sipping on one of the pre-made cocktails from the mini bar made by Rob, the super-talented barman downstairs (he did our wedding cocktails, which also went down a storm) whilst watching Ru-Paul’s Drag Race on the TV. The Ginger Rooms, Hove

Pre-made cocktails aside, there’s also tea & coffee (in the form of a Nespresso coffee machine) and plenty of snacks should you get the midnight munchies. There’s even a pre-made beach bag at your disposal, complete with towels and beach mat should you fancy a morning swim before checking out.
The bed was a dream (no pun intended) and my jet-lagged body was very appreciative of the Royal Warrant Hypnos mattress and Soak & Sleep bedding - it was like one huge hug! The heavy curtains kept the morning light out so we slept for hours, waking up with huge appetites ready for breakfast downstairs in the restaurant.
The Ginger Rooms are a short bus ride away from the city center, and a 2 minute walk from the beach.

The Ginger Rooms is the perfect home away from home and bloody good value too! Rooms cost between £80 and £160 per night
